PREVENTING POLLUTION & FLOODING |
|
Cities, towns, condominium associations and private landowners need to
provide a clean and sanitary environment. This includes maintaining a
system for preventing pollution and flooding by efficiently moving both
wastewater and storm water to an environmentally safe place such as a
treatment plant or disposal system. This is accomplished through a system
of catch basins, storm drains, pipes and other structures.
It is vitally important to keep catch basins clear and flowing. The performance
of catch basins in removing sediment and other pollutants depends
on regular maintenance to retain the storage available in the basin to capture
sediment. Unless frequently maintained, catch basins can actually
become a source of pollutants through resuspension of particulate matter.

EXPERTS RECOMMEND REGULAR CLEANING & MAINTENANCE |
|
According to the Stormwater Manager’s Resource Center, catch basins
should be cleaned a minimum of once or twice per year, and more frequently
in industrial use areas. Frequent clean-out can retain the volume in
the catch basin sump available for treatment of wastewater flows.
The waste that builds up in storm drains is high in solids, has high concentrations
of heavy metals, and can be contaminated with petroleum
hydrocarbons. In addition, pools of standing water that gather in blocked
storm drains are breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other disease-carrying
insects. This is of particular concern with the spread of the dangerous
West Nile virus in the New England region.
Cleaning should be done in the spring after the first big snow melt; in the
fall after trees have shed their leaves; and during other times of particularly
heavy rainfall or snowfall.
